Non Commissioned Officers: Everyone whose rank is OF-1 and below. These are the members who have to move up in regiments or with British Army Wide Trainings (BAWT) to have the chance of getting into OTC to become future British Army Officers.
Officers: Members ranked OF-2 through OF-6. These are officers within regiments who are tasked with various things depending on their regiment.
General Officers: The COs and some of the XOs of regiments ranks are between OF-7 and OF-9, with the exception of the AEST General who counts as Chief of Staff. General Officers are tasked with running regiments and ensuring everything functions properly within them and all staff positions are filled with competent staff
Chiefs of Staff: The AEST General, ASM, ACGS, DCGS and CGS. The Chiefs of Staff are tasked with ensuring the entire group is running well and helping to resolve any issues that may arise within regiments.
The structure provides the easiest and most efficient way to handle any issues and/or concerns within the group. The reason it is put in place is to allow those who are higher up in the rank structure to continue working on their daily tasks and or taking care of the regiment they oversee.
If you find yourself in the situation of following the chain of command and you did not receive a confirmation from the higher up, you are allowed to ascend the chain and go to the next one that is higher up so long as it’s been at least 12 hours.
